Advertising and Marketing

“Advertising is the greatest art form of the twentieth century.”

– Marshall McLuhan

Overview

Got a knack for selling? Strong sense of design? You should consider a career in advertising and marketing. Advertising and marketing creates demand for products and services, paving the way to increased sales. Our accredited online associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in business administration – with concentrations in advertising, marketing, media, promotions or public relations – can help you earn a job as an account executive, advertising manager, brand manager, creative director, marketing manager, media director, promotions manager, public relations director, or sales manager.

Advertising and marketing is competitive and only jobseekers who stand out will stand a chance.  An advertising school online is a convenient way to stay in the advertising and marketing field while earning your valuable marketing degree.  An accredited marketing degree online or an accredited online advertising degree may be just the thing to put you ahead of the others and, certainly, that combined with continuing job experience will be a serious advantage.  Plus, an online advertising or marketing degree program will definitely increase your chances for career advancement and higher earnings.

Advertising and Marketing: Career Insights

  • With the economy on the upswing, companies are spending more on advertising and marketing.
  • New jobs will be created, but since this is a “glamour profession,” competition is tough – and having the right education is critical.
  • It is common to work long hours, travel frequently, and change employers regularly.
  • For top positions, an MBA with a concentration in marketing is becoming mandatory.

Account Executive

The account executive at an advertising agency manages the client’s account, with responsibility for strategy, media, creative, budget and timelines. Account executives typically begin as assistant account executives with career advancement taking them up to account supervisor, management supervisor, and account director. Many account executives have an accredited bachelor’s degree in business administration and return to school for their master’s in business administration after several years in the workforce.  This is much more convenient to do with the growing availability of an accredited advertising school online.

Advertising Manager

The advertising manager oversees advertising activities and works closely with promotions, public relations and sales managers. The advertising manager also works closely with the advertising agency on print, broadcast and Internet ad campaigns. Advertising managers typically have bachelor’s degrees in marketing, business or business administration, and some may have MBA’s from accredited marketing schools as well.

Brand Manager

A brand manager is a client-side position with responsibility for all marketing, advertising and promotional activities for a specific brand, including packaging, sales pitch, promotional incentives, advertising, direct marketing, and public relations. Brand managers at larger companies almost always have a master’s in business administration with a concentration in marketing.

Creative Director

The creative director is responsible for all “creative” advertising and marketing activities, i.e., headlines, TV commercial ideas and production, and design of packages of ads. The creative director typically supervises copywriters and art directors, and works closely with the account executive to sell advertising concepts to the client. Creative directors typically have degrees in advertising or design, with certifications in design programs such as Adobe Photoshop.

Marketing Manager

The marketing manager focuses on marketing strategy and implementation, which may include advertising and promotion, but also may involve partnerships, co-branding and co-marketing efforts, and direct-to-consumer sales initiatives. The marketing manager’s responsibility is to generate demand for the firm’s products and services. A marketing manager may have an associate’s degree in business administration or a bachelor’s of science in business administration. A few may have a master’s.

Media Director

The media director is in charge of media strategy, planning and placement, determining which media are the most effective and efficient at reaching the target audience, then developing a plan involving specific media vehicles (i.e., publications and programs) and then negotiating placement in those media vehicles. In today’s competitive job market, media directors typically have an MBA.

Promotion Manager

The promotion manager is in charge of brand promotions, typically incentives to try a product, or to buy an increased quantity of a product. Promotions managers often have specific numeric sales targets, e.g., to distribute 50,000 samples of a new product.

Public Relations Manager

The public relations manager’s job is to promote his brand using “free” media – that is, not by buying advertising space. That said, however, the public relations manager’s job is very similar to that of someone in advertising, in that he must still develop a marketing strategy, select appropriate media, and develop communications points he hopes will be played back in the news and feature stories.

Sales Manager

The sales manager works as a counterpart to the advertising or marketing manager. If advertising and marketing generate demand, then sales’ job is to close the deal. Sales managers tend to be very tactical in their thinking, and typically have well-defined sales quotas to meet every quarter.

If these kinds of positions and potentially high salaries sound good to you, you better start marketing yourself as an advertising and marketing executive.  But, first things first, make sure you've got the right credentials for the job.  With our accredited online advertising degree programs, marketing degrees online, accredited career training in advertising and marketing and more, you'll find the right advertising school online and be the next hot product in no time.
