Engineering

“A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works.”

– Freeman Dyson

Overview

Do you like to design and build? Do you look at buildings, bridges, appliances and gadgets and think, I could do that? If so, consider a career as an engineer. You’ll be responsible for making the stuff that makes up our world, bricks and mortar or bits and bytes. Our accredited online associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s of engineering degrees will help you build a career as an electrical, electronics, computer hardware, biomedical or civil engineer.

Engineering: Career Insights

  • Engineers have solid career prospects, though opportunities vary by field and also tend to be cyclical.
  • Engineers require at least a bachelor’s degree. Typically, they earn more than the average college graduate.
  • When you’re an engineer, graduating college doesn’t mean you’re finished with education, since continuing education is necessary to keep up with new technical developments in your chosen sub-specialty.

Electrical and Electronics Engineers

An electrical engineer, (EE or “double-E”) must understand all aspects of working with electricity, thus enabling him to build a range of systems from power generators to motors to electrical infrastructure. Electrical engineers must be very good at science and math. Electronics Engineers accomplish their work on a smaller scale, designing the electrical aspects of electronics components such as microprocessors. Both electrical and electronics engineers do a lot of work for and with computers; specialists in computer hardware are called Computer Hardware Engineers.

Civil Engineer

A civil engineer isn’t just an engineer who is pleasant; a civil engineer is also trained to address the design and creation of large-scale projects such as roads, bridges, airports and dams. Often, a civil engineer will specialize in just one of these areas. The major specialties within civil engineering are structural, water resources, environmental, construction, transportation, and geotechnical engineering.

Environmental Engineer

Environmental engineers solve environmental problems such as water and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, and public health issues. Environmental engineers conduct hazardous-waste management studies, evaluate the significance of the hazard, offer analysis on treatment and containment, and develop regulations to prevent mishaps. They design municipal sewage and industrial wastewater systems. They analyze scientific data, research controversial projects, and perform quality control checks.

If you would like to engineer a career in engineering, find out how an accredited online associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s of applied science in engineering can wire you into a career as an electrical engineer, electronics engineer, computer hardware engineer, biomedical engineering technologist, development engineer, design engineer, cost engineer, environmental engineer, or architect/civil engineer.
