IT Online Degrees

“Information is the oxygen of the modern age.”

Ronald Reagan

Overview

Do you like to manage computer systems? Well, there’s good news – the number of jobs for systems analysts, database administrators, and data communications specialists will continue to rise as demand for skilled systems administrators continues to grow. And IT online degrees are both available and relatively easy to earn – which is good, because without an online degree, IT is a hard field to break into.  Most IT professionals have at least a bachelor degree, so you’ll want an IT bachelor degree online before starting.  Additionally, many computer professionals have certificates such as APLUS, certified Internet webmaster (CIW), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA), and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE2000).

IT Online Degrees: Career Insights

  • With the economy on an upswing, companies are again investing in technology – good news for those seeking to enter the information technology field.
  • As computers become even more pervasive, the need for skilled IT professionals continues to rise.
  • Typical computer jobs require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, along with relevant work experience.

Computer Systems Analyst

Systems analysts look at the computing needs of an entire computer system – a collection of servers, databases, applications, and processes – and develop, manage and maintain solutions. Their job involves determining the requirements of the systems, creating specifications to address those requirements, building the system to meet those specifications, then testing and deploying the system, and finally managing the system. Systems analysts may also find jobs as systems engineers or systems architects. Systems analysts positions generally require an accredited IT bachelor degree online, or a bachelor in management information systems, or even a bachelor of science in business administration with a concentration in information technology.

Data Communication Analyst

A data communications analyst specializes in communications systems, chiefly voice communications and electronic systems such as email. He researches, tests, evaluates, and recommends data communications hardware and software, identifying areas of operation that need upgrades based on user needs and system requirements. The data communication analyst tests and evaluates hardware and software to determine efficiency, reliability, and compatibility with existing system, then analyzes test data and recommends hardware or software for purchase. This position typically requires a master’s or IT bachelor degree, online or off, in computer science.

Database Administrator

The database administrator (DBA) is in charge of a company’s computer databases, which may be used to store customer information, product information, or other sensitive and proprietary information. The DBA designs, codes, tests, and implements the data base, designing it in such a way as to make the information most useful to the company for research, marketing and sales applications. The DBA works closely with software engineers, to make sure programs are constructed appropriately to access the database, and with network and systems administrators as well, to ensure the database is able to fulfill its role in the multiple systems it serves. Database administrators need not only an understanding of computers that they may gain through IT online degrees, but also an excellent understanding of business strategy and tactics. This position typically requires an IT master or IT bachelor degree, online or off.

If you would like to program yourself for a career as an information technology professional, find out how an accredited doctoral, master, or IT bachelor degree online, along with the correct certifications and advanced training can help you find a job as a computer systems analyst, data communication analyst, or database administrator.
